The Meaning of Numbers in Feng Shui

The Meaning of Numbers

Each number has been associated with many meanings since its inception up to the present day. Numbers are linked with various aspects of life and directly impact an individual’s self, life, and destiny, including birth dates, phone numbers, and vehicle numbers.

Below are the meanings of numbers in Feng Shui arrangement. Of course, the number 0 is not included here, as it symbolizes the invisible.

Number 1:

The number of deities, of the prime essence. It is understood as the son of the heavens. Number 1 symbolizes the ultimate peak—the highest mountain that stands alone with no other.

As humans, no one can hold this position for long, as it is solitary and perilous; simply put, we are not divine. Only deities can maintain this position forever.

Number 2:

Symbolizes a pair, a couple, a number of happiness, and facilitates events like birthdays, weddings, and festivals. Number 2 represents the balance of Yin and Yang, combining to create Tai Liu—the origin of all things.

Number 3:

A solid number, Feng Shui uses various numerology fields in arranging objects, and number 3 is particularly useful for enhancing stability and harmony in the environment.

Number 4:

Represents the formation of two pairs. Two pairs are generally considered auspicious and favorable, but in Hong Kong pronunciation, it sounds like the word for “death” (tử). Hence, this combination is not very auspicious. Feng Shui avoids any arrangement involving the number four.

Number 5:

Represents honor, power, and the five directions: East, West, South, North, and Center. Number 5 symbolizes longevity and immortality.

Number 5 also combines with the golden house, holding prosperity and happiness for each family. It is an excellent number for Feng Shui arrangements.

Number 6:

Is double the number 3 and thus represents auspiciousness and smoothness. 3 + 6 = 9, and together they form a group of 3 lucky numbers. An arrangement using any items with 3, 6, or 9 pieces is beneficial for remedying unfavorable areas or directions.

Number 7:

Is a number of magical power. Deep-rooted legends such as the 7 stars (Thất Tinh) and 7 swords (Thất Kiếm) are used in Taoist rituals, symbolizing the power to repel evil spirits in Feng Shui.

An arrangement of 7 objects is endowed with mystical power and a sense of inviolability.

Number 8:

A number with many religious associations, such as the 8 immortals in Taoism and the Eightfold Path in Buddhism. A Bagua mirror placed at the front door can block negative influences before evil spirits can enter.

Number 9:

Represents happiness, peace, and prosperity. It symbolizes eternal beauty. Many people favor the number 9 because it almost represents completeness and fulfillment.

The meanings of these numbers are not only applied in Feng Shui arrangements but also in many aspects of our lives. Possessing numbers with auspicious meanings can make life seem much more enchanting. Everything that exists in our lives, being tangible, perhaps has its own vitality and spirit… Heaven and Earth are affectionate for this reason!
